GateHouse Media is buying The Pueblo Chieftain newspaper from Star-Journal Publishing Corp. of Pueblo, Colo., the paper reported.

The sale is expected to conclude in around 30 days.

New Mexico-based Dirks, Van Essen & Murray represented the Rawlings family in the transaction. Terms of the sale were not disclosed.

The Chieftain is the oldest daily newspaper in Colorado, with a history going back to 1868.

Jane Rawlings, president of the Star-Journal Publishing Corp. and publisher of The Pueblo Chieftain, took the reins in 2016 after the death of her father, Robert Hoag Rawlings, the paper's owner, publisher and editor. “It was my dad’s wish that The Chieftain would be sold upon his death, with proceeds to be placed in the Rawlings Foundation and that those funds would be used for the betterment of Pueblo and Southern Colorado,” Rawlings said.

“We are honored that the Rawlings family has chosen us to continue the stewardship of this great community newspaper for years to come,” said Jason Taylor, president of Western U.S. Publishing Operations for GateHouse Media.
