Seven media organizations have banded together to express concern over Facebook’s new policy that the organizations say labels quality news as political advocacy. The organizations represent over 20,000 media publishers and professionals in over 120 countries.
The media organizations, which represent newspapers, television, magazines and digital natives, sent a letter June 11 encouraging Facebook to exempt news organizations from its new policy to label and archive political advertising.
“Placing news ads in an archive designed to capture political advertising implies that Facebook considers there is a political agenda behind journalism. This is not a marketing or business issue. We see your policy as another step toward furthering a false and dangerous narrative that blurs the lines between real reporting from the professional media and propaganda,” the letter read.
The groups are the American Society of News Editors, the European
Publishers Council, the News Media Alliance, the World Association of Newspapers and News Publishers (WAN-IFRA), Digital Content Next, the Association of Magazine Media and the Society of Professional Journalists.
The letter proposes criteria for identifying qualified news organizations. Audience size and membership in accepted industry associations that represent a broad spectrum of publishers could be among the criteria, the letter said. “A process could also be formed to enable publishers that are not members of any of the listed organizations to be exempted from the ad archive,” it said.
