The move is happening as part of the grouping of Maine's newspapers under one man, MaineToday Media owner Reade Brower. With his recent buys, including the Lewiston-based Sun Journal, The Times Record of Brunswick and Journal Tribune of Biddeford, Brower now owns a large portion of the state's weekly papers and all its dailies except one. The Bangor Daily News is owned by Publisher Richard Warren.
The Phoenix Publisher Mark Guerringue said that a contract with MaineToday Media hasn't yet been signed. Terms of the deal, which was first reported by Portland-based magazine The Bollard, were not made available.
The Phoenix is currently being printed by MaineToday Media. Guerringue and The Phoenix's editor said the paper will retain editorial independence. "We have no plans to change that," MaineToday CEO Lisa DeSisto said.
