According to the Press Gazette's numbers, this puts the net loss of local titles since 2005 at 228.

Forty newspapers were shuttered and ten were started January 1 to December 31, 2017.

The figures are based on reports of title closures and launches on both Press Gazette and Hold The Front Page.

The Press Gazette reports that in 2017 at least 252 jobs were cut, but about 207 jobs were created, resulting in a net loss of 45 jobs.

Trinity Mirror closed more titles than any other publisher, with 12 closed in 2017. Newsquest launched seven newspapers, more than any other publisher.
