ABB recently completed a control console upgrade at the Strasbourg print site of Dernieres Nouvelles D'Alsace, in France. The project combines the latest control console technology with the original ABB press control system that has been running since 1989, an ABB press release said.

The ABB control system on the paper's Wifag OF7 press was installed when the press was new, almost 30 years ago, and has been running reliably since then. Despite the longevity of the system, the management at the paper decided that the first steps of a modernization were required.

ABB's newest release of the MPS Control Console, which is now running at the Strasbourg site, features touchscreen operation and is based on ABB's Compact HMI. It replaces the original consoles that were based on the Procontic DP800 system, and eliminates the need for a separate control desk for theTechnotrans dampening system used on the press. The operation of the dampening system is now fully integrated into the MPS Control Console.

ABB, with headquarters in Zurich, Switzerland, operates in more than 100 countries and has about 135,000 employees.
